Scars of Growth wins main Award at NaturVision 2025

Scars of Growth wins the German Environmental and Sustainability Award at NaturVision Film Festival, funded by the Ministry for Climate and Energy of the region Baden-Württemberg. We are very humbled and happy. Congratulations to all the nominees.

The Jury statement says:

“The German Environmental and Sustainability Award at the NaturVision Film Festival 2025 goes to a film that represents a successful compromise between journalism and the big screen. SCARS OF GROWTH is visually stunning and close to its protagonists, even though it deals with a complex topic: mining in Europe. The two directors, Monika Grassl and Linda Osusky, succeed in creating a multi-perspective picture of this truly controversial issue. On the one hand, we need raw materials for the energy transition, on the other hand, the mines are located in sensitive natural areas, in the arid south of Spain there is a threat of gigantic water consumption, and in Lapland, already plagued by mining, there is further destruction of reindeer migration routes. The criticism is clearly expressed, but the film is not one-sided; the pro-mining side is also able to express its point of view clearly. This documentary shows the dilemma of the European "Green Deal" in an understandable and emotionally compelling way. It is particularly gratifying that the filmmakers developed their film at the Documentary Campus Masterschool, a European training program for young filmmakers.“

We want to express our deepest gratitude to the jury, the festival organisation and the funders for this recognition.
